Looking back on 2013.. another great year! I continue to travel, teach skiing at Arapahoe Basin, work with Summit Public Radio & TV Board and keep up with wonderful friends and family. Lots of exercise... keeping up with younger friends is keeping me younger! I joined the Lake Dillon Theater Play Club and read six great plays, participating in discussions with an intelligent group of colleagues and Theater staff... great insights from multiple perspectives.
'Annual' winter kayak trip with friend, Sherry, was to Honduras with the intention of kayaking and snorkeling for a week while living on an atoll off the coast of Utila. Well, the weather did not facilitate our plan! Rather than one day to travel from home to our island, it took us three days in huge rain and winds. A half day of kayaking in high seas, no snorkeling but yoga every day and great food and company describes the experience. Photo in Roatan, not a planned stop, but...
At A-Basin - teaching, managing an online customer survey, coordinating a women's ski program, Legendary Ladies... Photo of me (in green) with 2 students at the top of the Pali chair. Yes, I am getting older, but my skiing continues to improve as a result of teaching... practicing what I preach! I have now completed 20 years teaching skiing... who knew this would truly be another career :-)

Snow was sparse early in the 2012-2013 season, but March through May brought lots of snow... so much that A-Basin's last day was June 9! I skied with friends, Margie and Joey; we were amazed at the snow quality... gorgeous sunshine and Colorado blue skies. With snow on the ground, we can snowshoe and cross country ski on many of the trails that we hike in the Summer. Summer also means kayaking on Lake Dillon! The Spring snow permitted water levels to almost reach normal! This summer, I also took rowing lessons... need lots more practice and coaching before I can successfully row a skull!

Grandchildren Andrew, Laura and Mollie are growing into beautiful people -- not surprising since they have pretty wonderful parents :-) While Andrew's primary sport continues to be ice hockey, in the Fall he plays lacrosse. A big event for Laura and her family, was her Bat Mitzvah in April... she did a wonderful job and looked beautiful! Laura is becoming an accomplished figure skater. Laura and Andrew continued their summer camps in Maine and did have chance to visit each other. The family grows as 'best' cousins Jennifer & Ken increase their family... in photo on right, Laura, Andrew and Mollie are with Gabi 3 and brother, Ryan, almost 2. I returned to NY for Hanukah & Thanksgiving with extended family... photo of me with Laura and Mollie.

In July, Mollie and I shared a great trip, Digging for Dinosaurs, in western CO, organized by the American Museum of Natural History, NYC. Amazing to learn about Colorado 165 million years ago --- and the remains are still be found!
Photo of Mollie with model of Mongolian dinosaur skull! Looking ahead to 2014, I will be looking for dinosaur remains in the Gobi desert of Mongolia in June... Mollie's sport (and love) is horseback riding!
A fun - and delicious - addition to my home is a greenhouse on my lower deck. Plan is to grow vegetables and herbs from April through October, extending the short growing season of my 9600' high desert climate. Coming home and picking a fresh salad from my garden will be a treat!
In May, I traveled in Ethiopia an exceptional country in terms of its people and very long, consistent history. We visited the historical north and the tribes of the south... like walking into the pages of National Geographic! photos...
Dorze tribe; Elaine, Barbara and me in Lalibela absorbing the rock hewn churches dug out of the granite mountain; me on bench during trek in Simien Mtns. The whole story told in photos and prose is on my blog sgethiopia2013.blogspot.com
A kayak trip in the Johnstone Straits of British Columbia in September has opened up new travel possibilities! Such a great experience that friend, Sherry, and I are returning to the area in September 2014. This 2014 trip will replace camping by living on a 'Mothership'... this means hot showers and warm beds, inside, after a full day of paddling! Orcas, Pacific Dolphins, Brown Bears... are among the wildlife that live in this area in Canada - in the southern end of Alaska's Inside Passage.
My life is perhaps best viewed through the lens of my car - packed for any/all possibilities, the view from my window (including reflection in glass) and the moose in my back yard!

2014 opened with snow... which continues unabated. Skiing - and life - are wonderful!
I wish you and your family a HAPPY and HEALTHY 2014!
